About Jim

Dr. Knisely has taught mathematics and computer science at BJU since 1992. He holds a Ph.D. and a M.S. degree in mathematics from Clemson University. His research for his doctorate was in communication in networks, while his Master’s research was in solving systems of equations using pipelined multi-processor computers. He enjoys studying finite graph properties especially graph colorings. A more humorous interest is in optimal lawn mowing techniques. He finds his field experiments especially invigorating. He has presented for the Guy Jacobsohn Memorial Mathematics Colloquium Series at Converse College and participates in the Graph Theory and Algorithms seminars held biweekly at Furman University.

Computer science is an ever changing field, so Dr. Knisely has worked or consulted in the computing field each summer since 1991. These jobs have allowed him to contribute in diverse areas like EDI in the textile industry, signature capturing on pen pads, process variations applied to school improvement, rapid prototyping with 3D printers, and retrofitting vending machines for cashless purchases. The last one even resulted in a patent with two other BJU faculty members. He also provides technical support for several grants including collecting survey data for Project CREATE three times a year, and he is currently acting as the third party for collecting data for the study “Evaluating Teacher-Training Programs: Do Praxis II Scores and GPAs Correlate with Teacher Self-Reporting Effectiveness?” by Dr. Holly Pae at USC Upstate.

Dr. Knisely enjoys participating in outreach programs each semester. In the fall, he coordinates the construction of the obstacle course for BJU’s Farm Fest which is an outreach to teens. Each spring, he participates in the Bob Jones Museum and Gallery’s annual Living Gallery presentation. It presents the gospel through drama, music and art and is seen annually by over 15K people. He and his wife Tami are members at Suber Road Baptist Church and are involved in various ministries there.
